The Cantrip Cantina: Holiday Libations

There may be an icy wind blowing outside, but inside the Cantrip Cantina, the hearth fires are roaring and the spirit of New Dawn is in the air. To celebrate this joyous yearly festival, Arleena has stocked her special reserve of holiday libations to warm the hearts and lift the spirits of all the patrons celebrating within her fine establishment. 

  And for the more magically inclined, Arleena has prepared a few new cantrips to capture the feeling of the season and pass along her good tidings of minor magics to the world at large.

Below are several new cantrips, extraordinary liquors, and a feat to extend some of Arleena’s gift for cantrip casting to players. As with all new play options, please consult your Game Master before use to verify that they mesh with the tone and direction of their game.

Festive Cantrips

The following a few of Arleena’s cantrips that capture the spirit of New Dawn and the heroes the holiday celebrates. 

Encouraging Words

Enchantment Cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V
Duration: Instantaneous

You know exactly what your comrade needs to hear to bolster their spirits and keep them in the fight. Choose a target within range and if that target can hear and understand you they receive 1d4 temporary hit points until the end of your next turn and receive advantage on their next attack roll.

The number of temporary hit points given increases by 1d4 when you reach 5th level (2d4), 11th level (3d4), and 17th level (4d4).

Kindle the Spark

Abjuration Cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

You begin an esoteric chant and reach toward your target, fanning the heroic spark within them. Until the end of your next turn, a target creature within range becomes immune to the frightened condition. If they are already under the effects of the frightened condition, they may ignore it until the end of your next turn. 

The number of target creatures you can target increases by 1 when you reach 5th level (2), 11th level (3), and 17th level (4).

Breath of the Arinast

Evocation Cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 5 feet
Components: V, M (a handful of pine needles)
Duration: Instantaneous

You call upon the energy of the mighty Arinast mountains, exhaling its icy winds toward your foes. Each creature of your choice that you can see within range must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the target creatures take 1d4 cold damage and have disadvantage on attack rolls targeting you. 

This spell’s damage increases by 1d4 when you reach 5th level (2d4), 11th level (3d4), and 17th level (4d4).

A Taste of Catripothy

The following is a feat that is open to any wizard or sorcerer who shares Arleena’s passion for minimalist casting.

Apprentice Cantripothist

Prerequisites: wizard or sorcerer

You’ve take the time to study under Arleena Rindaloo and have learned the basics of her beloved Cantripothy. You gain the following benefits:

  • Increase your Intelligence by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • You learn two cantrips of your choice from any spell list. These count as either wizard or sorcerer spells for you, but do not count against your number of cantrips known.
  • When a cantrip you know would increase in damage, area, number of targets, or in any other way at 5th, 11th, and 17th level increments, you may increase them at 4th, 10th, and 16th level increments instead.

Seasonal Reserves

The following is a selection of Arleena’s seasonal menu of extraordinary liquors that are sure to fill every heart with the joy of the holiday. 

Star Crystal Brandy

Extraordinary liquor

10 gp, .5 pint.

This shimmering red-orange brandy tastes as bright and effervescent as the star crystal dust it contains. For the next hour, you may cast the dancing lights cantrip at will. 

Arleena’s Grablenut Chocolate

Extraordinary liquor

15 gp, .5 pint.

A pleasant warming sensation spreads from your stomach and throughout your body as you drink this delicious boozy hot chocolate. For the next hour, you have advantage on saving throws against cold damage. 

Hero’s Heart Ale

Extraordinary liquor

10 gp, 1 pint.

As you drink this glowing golden ale, you feel your heart and courage swell, readying you to face any challenge. If you have the frightened condition, it is immediately removed. For the next hour, you have advantage on saving throws against fear effects.
